The hard work of the Cockman House Veggie Growers has paid off after taking out multiple placings at the 2017 Wanneroo Show.
Cockman House is not only Wanneroo’s oldest standing residence – it also houses some remarkable vegetable gardens run by a group of dedicated volunteers who donate their produce to a local lifestyle village.
The Cockman Family were renowned market gardeners in their time and the Cockman House Veggie Growers are living up to the name – walking away with four second placings at the recent Wanneroo Show.
“We were delighted with the result, considering it was the first time we’ve entered,” said volunteer gardener Joy Greenhalgh.
“Some of our volunteers have been with us for more than a decade and we get together to look after the vegetable gardens at Cockman House two to three times a week.”
The vegetable growing prowess of the Cockman House Veggie Growers secured second place in the following categories at the 2017 Wanneroo Show:
- Section: Vegetables; Class: Carrots, on tray
- Section: Vegetables; Class: Collection of salad vegetables on tray, one layer
- Section: Vegetables; Class: Any variety of vegetable not elsewhere specified
- Section: Vegetables; Class: Leaf vegetables, e.g. cabbage or lettuce, one
The Cockman House Veggie Growers tend to the gardens and grow vegetables year round on the grounds closest to Wallaburnup Swamp in Yellagonga Regional Park.
Deputy Mayor Natalie Sangalli said that the Veggie Growers help to promote the heritage gem that is Cockman House by showing visiting school groups around the garden.
“Cockman House really is a treasure that our residents should take the time to visit,” Cr Sangalli said.
Cockman House is open to the public on Sundays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
