The City of Wanneroo was recently announced as the best local government in Western Australia for creating environments that protect and support the health of children.
The City was named the Best in WA overall winner in the 2017 Western Australia’s Local Government Children’s Environment and Health Policy Awards. The City also excelled in the Child Health and Development, Climate Change, Healthy and Safe Food, Injury Prevention, Nature Play and Shade in Public Places categories.
The Children’s Environment and Health Policy Awards – now in their seventh year - are presented by the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA.
The top award for Best in WA was accepted by Director of Community and Place, Debbie Terelinck, recognising the City’s excellence in implementing policy influenced by consultation with children from the community.
The City also received top honours in Nature Play category for supporting the ‘Cubby Town’ event at Yanchep National Park. This event encouraged children and families to participate in risk and resilient play, building cubbies and forts, making mud pies, creating nature crafts and testing their abilities on the rick climbing wall and high ropes course.
Dr Melissa Stoneham, Director of The Public Health Advocacy Institute said, “We are so excited to be acknowledging the Councils in WA who have developed policies and provide programs, services and information that are relevant and valued by children and young people.”
