City committed to road safety: Blessing of the Roads

Promoted by the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise program, the annual Blessing of the Roads event aims to create awareness for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians while travelling during the busy Easter period.

The ceremony will be held on Tuesday 31 March 2015 next to the City’s busiest intersection, Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive, Tapping and will feature special guest speaker and Australia's Local Hero finalist Stacey Dunbar.

Ahead of the event, Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts has urged all road users to take care this Easter and school holiday period.

“Everyone who uses our roads needs to be responsible and play their own part in improving road safety,” Mayor Roberts said. “We all need to take care, keep within the speed limits, wear seatbelts, never use mobile phones while driving and never drink and drive.

“Fatigue is also a silent killer on WA roads so drivers need to ensure they are not driving while tired and if you are on a long trip, make sure you stop regularly.”

During the ceremony, the WA Police Chaplain will pray for the safety of all roads as well as the emergency services staff who often deal with road trauma during this time.

Representatives from WA Police Service, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and St John's Ambulance will attend, with the Superintendent, North West Metropolitan Police speaking about the Easter road safety campaign.

Students from local schools will also play a part by placing white crosses in the ground to symbolise the lives lost on our roads in the past year.

Individuals who have continuously provided support to road safety programs and encourage others to follow their lead in striving to create safer road use will also be recognised at the event with the presentation of the Human Spirit Awards.
