Stay safe from swooping magpies this spring

Published Thursday, 21st September 2017

Magpie swooping season might be in full swing, but there are plenty of things you can do to keep safe from the swoopers this spring.

Magpie

Only a small proportion of magpies swoop on people with the birds often having a preference for certain individuals or types of ‘targets’.

Magpie breeding season typically occurs from spring to early summer with swooping generally ceasing once the chicks have left the nest.

It is highly recommended that people choose an alternative route to avoid areas known to have nesting magpies.

If you must enter a magpie nest ‘defence zone’, the chances of being swooped are reduced if you walk as part of a close group.

Other simple tips to avoid swooping magpies are as follows:

  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses or shelter under an umbrella to protect your face.
  • If a magpie swoops while cycling, dismount your bike and walk it past the nesting area.
  • Wave sticks or umbrellas in the air, or attach brightly coloured zip ties to your helmet to act as a deterrent.
  • Parents or care givers should ensure that children do not throw rocks or sticks at the birds as this will only exacerbate aggression.

If you are concerned about aggressive magpies in your area, please contact the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions helpline on 9474
9055, or the City of Wanneroo's Conservation Team on 9405 5000.
