Parents from Girrawheen have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in Jamie’s Ministry of Food mobile cooking classes, thanks to support from the City of Wanneroo.
In the second year of a three-year partnership with Edith Cowan University, the fun, handson classes were run over seven weeks, allowing parents from the Roseworth Child and
Parent Centre in Girrawheen to enhance their cooking skills and prepare healthy meals for their little ones.
City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the partnership was a wonderful way to encourage healthy lifestyles for local residents.
“The classes taught parents how to cook healthy meals for their families in a way that i budget-friendly and simple, yet nutritious and fun,” Mayor Roberts said.
“Assisting parents to hone their skills in cooking well-balanced meals for their children will help build a generation of young people who understand the importance of eating well.”
Teaching everything from how to prepare a roast dinner through to what to do with leftovers, the classes also helped build a healthy philosophy which can be easily implemented in the home, as well as hints and tips to make cooking fun and stress-free.
Jamie’s Ministry of Food started in the UK, with Jamie’s Ministry of Food Australia launched six years ago.
Jamie’s Ministry of Food program continues to run in the UK and has five teaching kitchens in Australia. The 2016 cooking course at Edith Cowan University was the first of its kind in Western Australia.
Last year the City’s program focused on supporting Aboriginal students from Girrawheen Senior High School’s Clontarf Academy.
