2017 Photography Competition the City’s Biggest
Published Wednesday, 31st May 2017
This year’s Discover Your Wanneroo photography competition was the biggest yet, with nearly 1,000 entries.
The competition, organised by the City of Wanneroo and now in its sixth year, was run exclusively on Instagram for the first time, and proved a huge hit with residents and visitors.
Judges said the 980 photographs submitted were of a very high standard, emphasising both the talent of the photographers and the ‘Insta worthy’ attributes of the City of Wanneroo.
“I am so pleased with the diversity and quality of the photographs – it truly shows residents, and visitors to the City, are enthralled by what they see,” said City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts.
“This year’s photographs were exceptional in capturing the essence of our City, with an array of photographs showcasing our parks, beaches, heritage buildings, wildlife, food… and even our train stations!” said Mayor Roberts.
The eight winning entries were announced at a ceremony on Monday 29 May. To enter, budding photographers were required to upload their photos to Instagram with the hashtag #DiscoverWanneroo2017.
This year’s theme was focused on everything that is ‘Uniquely Wanneroo’ and photographers were encouraged to capture images that were uniquely and identifiably taken in the City of Wanneroo.
The Mayor’s Choice Category continued in 2017, with Mayor Roberts selecting a photograph of the brilliant blue ocean waters, taken by Benn Tudor, as the winner.
The Open Category winner was Danny O’Loghlen with his photograph of the Lime Kilns in Carabooda; and Georgia Russell won first prize in the Youth Category with her image of a girl walking along one of the City’s beaches at sunset.
The winning photographs will be exhibited in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre from 30 May 2017 for four weeks.
