National Sorry Day – 26 May 2017
Published Thursday, 18th May 2017
National Sorry Day is held annually in Australia on 26 May. Since 1998, National Sorry Day is held to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of Australia’s Stolen Generation.
The first National Sorry Day was held one year after the Bringing Them Home report, May 1997. This report was the result of an inquiry by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, known as the Stolen Generation from the mid-1800s until the 1970s. For more information about National Sorry Day, please refer to Reconciliation Australia’s webpage.
The City of Wanneroo is committed to working towards Reconciliation and improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. The City of Wanneroo offers many health and wellbeing programs and projects, including the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan. However we recognise that there are numerous barriers preventing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples from accessing and becoming involved with these programs.
If you are a member of an organisation, or an individual that is able to recognise these barriers and have suggestions about how we can work to better overcome them, please contact the City’s Diversity Officer (Indigenous).
Your contributions are greatly appreciated and provide us with information and support to further improve our delivery of health and wellbeing programs that are inclusive of all members of our community.
