2017 Wanneroo Community Art Awards & Exhibition winners announced
Published Monday, 15th May 2017
Artistic talent from the local community and beyond is being showcased at the prestigious Wanneroo Community Art Awards & Exhibition, with nine artists sharing $16,200 in prize money.
The awards received 230 entries this year, including 156 paintings, 52 works on paper and 22 sculptures. More than 90 artworks were contributed by City of Wanneroo residents and the other entries came from around the state, including Halls Head, Busselton, Mahogany Creek, Gidgegannup, Mount Nasura and Gabbadah.
Mayor Tracey Roberts said the level of skill in this year’s awards was outstanding, and she was thoroughly impressed with the talent on display.
“The exhibition will leave visitors in awe. The outstanding talent shines through in the artworks, and almost half of all the entries this year are local residents of the City of Wanneroo. It certainly showcases our talented artists within the community,” she said.
“This exhibition demonstrates the creativity of our surrounding community. Creativity can be defined as the use of imagination or original ideas. Innovation, originality, individuality and inventiveness… these are all sought after qualities for our society and for business.
“It is wonderful to see such outstanding and diverse artworks being exhibited and I encourage everyone to take the time to visit the exhibition and see the stunning artworks for themselves.”
Artist Ian Kay won the main prize of $7,500 for his wood and stainless steel sculpture which was partly crafted from recycled materials.
Judges commented that the artwork was ‘simple, fun and playful,’ and represented a ‘beautifully realised concept’.
This year’s awards were judged by Lee Kinsella from the University of Western Australia, Janis Nedela, Artist and Assistant Curator of the Kerry Stokes Collection, and Helena Bogucki from Curtin University.
Visitors can take part in the judging of the People's Choice Award by nominating their favourite artwork.
The free exhibition will run in the gallery at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre from Saturday 13 May to Saturday 17 June (Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 4pm).
