The City of Wanneroo enjoyed a successful start to National Seniors Week last week, recognised at the WA Seniors Awards for its important work in improving the lives of older West Australians.
The City’s Community Services team won the WA Local Government Seniors Award for the range of opportunities provided for seniors to engage with the community.
These include the Poppin’ In program which links volunteers with socially isolated seniors; My Life My Words - a volunteer biography program recording the life stories of seniors; and a social support outings program which provides holistic activities to promote wellbeing.
One of the highlights is a partnership with the North Metropolitan TAFE which allows clients attending social and day club programs to participate in wellbeing experiences such as personal fitness, hydrotherapy, beauty and massage treatments as well as preventative and physical and mental health assessments.
Not only do the seniors have increased wellness and thoroughly enjoy the contact with other community members, it gives students practical experience to support their learning and communication skills.
Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City proudly values and celebrates the fantastic contribution of our senior citizens.
“We consistently review and identify how we can improve our delivery of innovative services to our community,” Mayor Roberts said.
“The main aim of our services for seniors is to reduce social isolation and provide meaningful connections, so it is wonderful that this has been recognised.
“I would like to acknowledge the valuable contribution our seniors make to our community each and every day.”
The City recognised National Seniors Week with several events at various facilities throughout the week, including libraries, day clubs and the Pearsall/Hocking Community Centre.
