Local cadets to be granted Freedom of Entry to the City

Published Monday, 31st October 2016

The City of Wanneroo will become one of only a few local governments in Western Australia to grant the prestigious Freedom of Entry privilege to a military unit.

Freedom of entry

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the rare honour recognised the special bond between the City and the local Australian Air Force Cadets of 704 Squadron and 721 Squadron.

“The contribution of these cadets is commendable. The values promoted through the cadets foster positive qualities that help shape these young people into responsible adults,” she said.

“Granting Freedom of Entry upon military units is symbolic and gives the right of general entry to the unit to march in the City on ceremonial occasions.

“It is appropriate for the City to grant this right in 2016 as it coincides with the Australian Air Force Cadet 75th Anniversary and 30 years since the establishment of what is now part of the 704 Squadron.

“By extending this invitation, we are able to honour a distinguished youth program and further strengthen the ties between the community and our servicemen and women.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with the cadets. To mark the Freedom of Entry conferral the squadrons will be officially changing their name to 704 (City of Wanneroo) Squadron and 721 (City of Wanneroo) Squadron.”

The parade for the granting of Freedom of Entry is an important event that will be held at the City’s most significant military site, Memorial Park.

Tradition prescribes that following the parade inspection and signing ceremony at the park the group marches past the entry to the civic building.

After leaving Memorial Park the parade will march along Civic Drive, onto Dundebar Road and finish on Servite Terrace.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend this very symbolic occasion.
