Published Monday, 4th July 2016

NAIDOC Week celebrates the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders all across Australia in the first full week of July.

To celebrate this years theme of Songlines, the City of Wanneroo hosted a free guided walk of one of the sections of the local Yaberoo Budjara Trail. The City has been working with Yanchep National Park and Noongar guide Derek Nannup, to create a guided walk that will entertain and educate participants about the rich Aboriginal history and culture on the trail.

As well as the guided walk, City of Wanneroo libraries will be hosting Aboriginal themed Story Times. These sessions, instead of using the traditional story time stories, will be focused on telling Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.

The Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre also has its Collecting Stories and Telling Tales exhibition in the main gallery. This exhibition has a display of a six metre art work that was completed by six City Of Wanneroo primary schools with Aboriginal artist Troy Bennell. The art work was created during the National Reconciliation Week period and was aimed at educating students about the Aboriginal stories and trails that have been part of the Wanneroo area for thousands of years.
