Mayor congratulates top educators

Ashdale Secondary College principal Carol Strauss and science teacher Mia Lennox have been named WA Secondary School Leader of the Year and WA Beginning Teacher of the Year respectively at the WA Education Awards 2014.
City of
Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts, who attended the awards breakfast, said the City
was proud to be home to Ashdale Secondary College, which had a reputation for
excellence.
"The WA
Education Awards are very prestigious so to take home the top honour in two
categories is a remarkable achievement," she said.
"This is
just another accolade for the school that was among the first 34 schools in
Western Australia to achieve prestigious Independent Public School status.
"I am
pleased that our residents, within the school's catchment, have access to such
high quality public education."
Ashdale
Secondary College principal, Carol Strauss was recognised for leading the
creation of a thriving school community and a world-class learning environment
for students.
Ms Strauss' commitment
to developing and mentoring staff, and focus on exemplary practice, innovation
and creativity was also commended.
Ashdale Secondary College science teacher, Mia Lennox was praised for taking the lead in curriculum development, including implementing the new Earth and Environmental Sciences ATAR course at the school. Her rich learning experiences that challenge students were also acknowledged.

Mindarie Senior College was a finalist in the WA Secondary School of the Year category.
Mayor Roberts
said two Year 11 students from Wanneroo Secondary College also provided wonderful
entertainment at the awards ceremony.
Adenine
Dimarucot sang Tina Turner’s River Deep Mountain High, and Henry Reriti sang
Blues Brothers', Minnie the Moocher.
