Boy meets his local heroes

Wanneroo resident Harrison Higgs, 4, met his local heroes at the Ashby Operations Centre on 3 February as he was given a tour around the garbage trucks.

Harrison loved watching the garbage trucks in action and was thrilled to meet the ‘bin men’
and receive a tour of the waste services trucks.

“Inviting young children to our waste services facility is very exciting for them and it is
wonderful they can have the chance to see how the trucks work and meet our wonderful
staff,” Mayor Tracey Roberts said.

Mother Katey Higgs said Harrison was always so excited about the ‘bin men’ visiting that he
cannot fall asleep the night before. He is always on hand to help his mum take the bins down the driveway before the trucks arrive, and then races outside when they drive down the
street.

“Our neighbour noticed how much he loves watching the trucks in action and she now pays
him 10c a bin to put her bins out the night before. The arrival of the trucks is the highlight of his week,” Katey said.

It was this same neighbour, Vicky, who contacted Waste Services, asking whether they
could give Harrison a tour of his favourite trucks.

“Every Friday he sits with his grandma and waits for the trucks to come. Rain or shine they
are out there because he loves them so much. It is lovely – the drivers give him a beep and
he follows them a bit down the road then he waits for them to come back and do the other
side of the street,” Vicky said.

On the day Harrison’s visit, he was met by Waste Operations Supervisors, Dan Vicencio and
Clyde Leach, who gave him a tour of three dumpster trucks and showed him how they
operated.

Harrison enthusiastically followed them around and then received a miniature wheelie bin to
take home and keep as a memento.
