Swooping Magpies Warning

Published Thursday, 10th September 2015

Residents should be aware that it is magpie nesting season and the chance of being swooped by a protective magpie when visiting our parks and natural areas has increased.

Magpie

Nesting season occurs from spring to early summer, and during this time it is recommended that you choose an alternative route to avoid areas known to have nesting magpies.

Other ways to avoid swooping magpies:

  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses or shelter under an umbrella to protect your face
  • If a magpie swoops while cycling, get off your bike and walk it past the nesting area
  • Wave sticks or umbrellas in the air, or attach brightly coloured zip ties to your helmet as a deterrent
  • Parents or care givers ensuring their children do not throw rocks or sticks at the bird as this will only increase the bird's aggression.

If you are concerned about aggressive magpies in your area, please contact Dept of Parks and Wildlife Wildcare helpline on 9474 9055; or the City of Wanneroo's Conservation Team on 9405 5000.
