Clarkson to get cooler with Urban Greening Grant

The $41,500 grant will forge a 1.4km trail of vegetation to provide shade and cool the pathway that connects to the Clarkson Train station and surrounding homes and businesses.

The Urban Greening Grants Program, delivered by the City of Wanneroo with the support of WALGA and funded by the Government of Western Australia, aims to improve urban canopy and create habitat and nature links.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the project was set to beautify the area, as well as provide food and shelter to local fauna.

“With less than 5 per cent canopy cover, this stretch of Neerabup Road is the perfect location for urban greening and promises substantial benefits for both the environment and our community,” she said.

“The project area is a major thoroughfare that connects housing to shopping and commercial precincts including Clarkson Youth Centre and Clarkson Library, as well connecting to Clarkson Train Station.”

State Environment Minister Reece Whitby said increasing urban canopy was one of the simplest ways to fight climate change.

“This funding will support local governments throughout Perth and Peel to create greener, leafier – and importantly, more liveable – communities,” he said.
