Local seniors are wielding paintbrushes, clay and pencils, all in the name of creating art and social supports.
In a stroke of genius, volunteer Chris set up Art Happenings at Hainsworth Community Centre in Girrawheen eight years ago.
The creative community art group meets weekly, tinkering across a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolour, textiles, wire and clay and recyclable materials, working on individual pieces and collaborating on group projects.
“I love art and I love watching people grow in their art,” she said.
“Members give something back to the group and help each other.
“We have a chat over a cuppa and a biscuit, help push the artists out of their comfort zone with their creations, helping develop their confidence and skills.”
Chris has diplomas in art therapy and art and design and uses these skills to mentor and encourage members, making the group an opportunity to improve mental health and wellbeing for local seniors.
Art Happenings has also helped beautify Hainsworth Community Centre, installing colourful mosaics and floral murals outside the building.
The group has held four exhibitions, workshops and sometimes hold sessions in ‘plein air’, also known as painting outdoors.
