From improved self-confidence to increased strength, Julie Osborne helps people with disabilities through the power of horse riding.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Capricorn has been based at Julie’s Pinjar property since 2007, an organisation that provides horse riding to people with disabilities in the City of Wanneroo.

Some 100 children and adults attend classes every week, put on by Julie and other instructors.

The participants have a range of disabilities – including Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and vision impairment – some using specialised equipment such as a vaulting roller and a Western saddle.

Julie said the riders learn new skills in a fun and relaxed way, as well as socialising and helping increase their self-confidence.

“It’s a natural therapy that horses give us, it’s not an office or a classroom,” she said.

“You can form a connection with the animals and with each other – it’s something you can’t get anywhere else.”

The participants ride 20 horses – including Chips, Mr Wilson and Splash – who range in size, from a small pony to three friendly Clydesdales.

“Riding is such a unique form of exercise, it can help strengthen walking muscles and improve balance,” Julie said.

“We had one rider who came to us in a wheelchair and either wheeled or was carried to the horse – she can now walk to the ramp.”

RDA Capricorn is supported by a team of 60 volunteers, from high school students to retirees.

“One of the things I adore about this organisation is the volunteers and their community-mindedness, people give up so much time,” Julie said.

RDA Capricorn celebrated 50 years of operation in 2022.
