Neighbourly communities

The City understands that the first step to creating friendlier and safer neighbourhoods is getting to know the people in your local area. 

To help you to connect with your neighbours you might want to consider checking out some of the useful resources below. Alternatively, feel free to get in touch with the Community Development team by email: communitydevelopment@wanneroo.wa.gov.au or phone: 9405 5600 if you have any questions about hosting a gathering or want some more ideas on how to create a stronger, friendlier neighbourhood.

Please note you may need to check with the Facilities Booking Team if you are intending to host a gathering at a local park, as larger gatherings may require an event application. 

• Nextdoor, a private social network for your suburb, is another way to connect with your neighbours and discover what is happening in your area. Visit: https://au.nextdoor.com/
• Neighbourhood Watch is a program to help neighbours to watch out for neighbours. It has a large amount of resources and can be a great way to get to know your neighbours and become more connected to your community. Visit: https://www.nhw.wa.gov.au/
• Conversation tips to help you start connecting with your neighbours. This can sometimes be a challenging thing to do, but with easy tips such as; pay your neighbour a compliment, ask a question or discuss a local issue, you’re sure to be well on your way to building meaningful connections.
• Build the connection by considering some of these tips to being neighbourly once you have struck up an initial conversation.
• Local community Facebook pages offer easy opportunities to connect with your neighbours. Most suburbs now have a community Facebook page and they’re usually free to join and very well used, so consider joining yours today.
• Neighbourhood Connect is driven by the motto ‘happier together’, and provides practical tips and tools to build lasting connections with and between your neighbours. Register your street and use the provided templates and activity ideas to connect with your neighbours and enjoy enduring connections thereafter.
• 80 great ideas for building neighbourly connections provides fun, creative and easy ideas to help you to start getting to know your neighbours. The ideas are divided in to sections such as; street focussed activities, things to do for families, culture, movies, music and books, and more.
