Waste processing
With the introduction of the three bin system the City is able to more efficiently process waste, better recover valuable resources from waste, and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. This benefits not only the environment but residents too, through keeping rates for waste disposal in check (as landfill is the most expensive disposal option).
Lime-green lid garden organics bin
There are over 60,000 garden organics (GO) bins in use throughout the City. Through the addition of the GO bin, the City is able to divert greens collected in these bins from potentially ending up in landfill and ensures they are put to good use instead.
The contents of your GO bin is first transferred to the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility. Here the garden waste is hand sorted for contamination before being transferred to GO Organics in Gingin. The clean greens then undergo a 12 week composting process before being screened and packaged up as a high quality, resalable soil amendment product such as potting mix.
To see this process in action, take a look at our video showing you the journey your garden organics takes from your garden until it becomes an end product.
Yellow lid recycling bin
Your recycling bin is sent to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The waste runs through a series of manual and mechanical sorting stations where the different waste streams such as plastic (multiple types), paper, aluminium, steel, cardboard and glass are separated.
In Western Australia, our recycled glass is turned into road base. Other materials are baled and transported to manufacturers to be reprocessed into new products.
Red lid general waste bin
Your general waste bin is delivered to Tamala Park where the contents are offloaded into landfill. You can help send less to landfill by making a few small changes to reduce the amount of waste you dispose of.
