Registering your pet

First-time pet registration

In Western Australia, all dogs over the age of three months and all cats over the age of six months must be registered with your local government. If this is the first time you are registering your pet, you will need to complete an Application for Cat and Dog Registration form (you will be prompted to sign in or register with the City of Wanneroo).

You have the option to register your pet for one year, three years, or for a lifetime. Please note that the registration period runs annually from 1st November to 31st October. This means that both 1-year and 3-year animal registrations will expire on 31st October, regardless of the month in which your pet was registered.

Dogs

  • All dogs aged three months and over must be registered with the City of Wanneroo and microchipped.
  • All dogs must wear both a registration tag and disc showing the owner’s name and address.
  • Households in residential areas are limited to two dogs.
  • Up to six dogs may be kept on a rural property (providing the rural property is over 4 hectares).
  • If your dog is sterilised, you will need to provide proof of sterilisation with the application form. A veterinary surgeon's certificate is the only proof that can be accepted if applying online.

Guide Dog/Assistance Dog

  • Guide Dog, Dog in training and Assistance Dog owners are exempt from paying registration fees and should be registered for a lifetime.
  • An assistance dog is defined as a dog whose use can alleviate or manage effect of a person’s disability or medical condition. A letter/certificate from one of the following organisations is required:
    • Assistance Dogs Australia
    • Lions Hearing Dogs
    • Seeing Eye Dogs
    • Royal Guide Dogs Association or
    • VisAbility Limited

Cats

  • All cats aged six months and over must be registered.
  • All cats must be microchipped and sterilised (proof of sterilisation must be provided).
  • Households are limited to 3 cats on their property.

*Pensioner concession of 50% applies to holders of:

  • A current Pensioner Concession card, or;
  • A Centrelink Commonwealth Seniors Health Card together with a Seniors Card, or;
  • A Department of Veteran Affairs Commonwealth Seniors Health Card together with a Seniors Card.

Renew pet registration

If you have previously registered your pet with the City of Wanneroo, a registration renewal notification will be sent to you in October each year. You can pay for the registration renewal online (see below).

Update your pet registration details

Transfer of Council

If you want to transfer your dog or cat’s registration from another Council to the City of Wanneroo, you will need to complete the Transfer of Council Form. There are two options:

Option 1: Complete the online Transfer of Council Form

Option 2: Download and complete the Transfer of Council Form

Please note:

  • If you choose to download and complete the PDF form, you will need to submit it via email, post, or in person.
  • There is no charge to transfer your dog’s registration.

Transfer pet ownership/registration to another owner

If the owner of the dog or cat has changed, or you wish to transfer the registration to a new owner, you will need to complete a Transfer of Ownership Form. There are two options:

Please note:

  • If you choose to download and complete the PDF form, you will need to submit it via email, post, or in person.
  • There is no charge to transfer dog ownership.

If your pet passes away

If your pet passes away, you will need to notify the City by completing the following form.

Apply to keep more than two dogs or three cats

Households in residential areas are limited to two dogs and three cats. Up to six dogs may be kept on a rural property (provided the rural property is over 4 hectares).

If you wish to keep more pets than permitted, you will need a permit from the City. Complete an online application form (see below) for your request to be assessed. You will be prompted to sign in or register with the City of Wanneroo.
