About the position

The City is seeking someone with knowledge and experience in tree risk management, arboriculture practices and leadership. As a pivotal member of our team, you'll align your efforts with the City's Urban Forest strategy and Street Tree Policy, driving initiatives that enhance biodiversity, maintain tree health, improve tree canopy coverage and manage tree risk.

  Key Accountabilities for the position are as follows:

  • Complete condition and risk assessments, evaluations of tree failure, tree value using ‘Helliwell” method, tree biomechanics, tree health and pathogens, tree identification, site assessment and public perceived concerns over tree issues on a scheduled basis and in response to emergency and reactive measures.
  • Investigate tree related incidents and provide condition assessments, condition ratings, history on prior works or incidents and implement immediate safety measures for identified hazards and risks.
  • Provide advice on the selection, planting, pruning, fertilizing and maintenance of trees and shrubs.
  • Ensure Tree Policy documentation, tree valuations, tree management plans, insurance claims and stakeholder communication is provided in accordance with the City’s records keeping and governance requirements to assist programming and implementation of tree related works, estimation of resources and providing recommendations on work method.
  • Provide leadership through direction, guidance and coaching to the Tree Inspection Officers using advanced resources allocation and people skills to achieve quality outputs aligned to customer needs.
  • Liaises with customers and stakeholders to deliver service excellence, ensuring that information is accurate, consistent, clearly communicated and issues are resolved in a timely manner for tree planting related enquiries.
  • Contribute to tree maintenance and arboriculture consulting contracts, including contributing to the development of technical specifications and the procurement process, ensuring that the delivery of contracts meets contractual specifications and obligations.

Arborist Position Description

About you

As a collaborative member of the Trees & Conservation Maintenance team, working with many different stakeholders the position is accountable for planning and implementing the City’s tree risk management program in line with the objectives in the Urban Forest Strategy and Street Tree Policy.

They will also thrive working in a very busy and change driven organisation.   As such, applicants must be able to demonstrate through their CV and covering letter that they meet the following capabilities:

Essential

  1. Diploma in Arboriculture; or in relevant discipline such as Horticulture or equivalent is required.
  2. Certified to undertake tree risk assessments using either QTRA, VALID Validator or TRAQ.
  3. Experience in tree assessment, including however not limited to; maintenance and risk management practices, interpretation tree morphology/ structural integrity, and hazard and risk identification.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of tree and plant identification, pest and disease, plant biology, pathology, physiology and biomechanics.
  5. Intermediate experience in the efficient utilisation of information systems and technology is required.
  6. C class Driver’s License is required.
  7. Intermediate computing, numeracy and literacy skills.
  8. Intermediate organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
  9. Advanced customer service skills.
  10. Advanced communication and problem-solving skills.
  11. Intermediate research and analysis skills.
  12. Intermediate negotiation and influencing skills.
  13. Knowledge of the practical application of occupational health and safety measures in the workplace, including operations where interaction with members of the public may be reasonably expected to occur.

Desirable

  1. Basic Worksite Traffic Management.
  2. Current Working with Children Check.
  3. Qualifications in project management.
  4. Experience in preparation of quotation and Tender specifications.
  5. An understanding of Local Government operations and/or local government experience.
