Beach Renourishment

Prior to winter each year the City undertakes planned beach renourishment along Quinns Beach, Quinns Rocks. Beach nourishment involves the placement of sand, sourced from a local sand quarry, along the beach. The additional sand creates a buffer against the impacts of winter storm events and limits the damage to coastal assets. The locations for beach renourishment are selected each year based upon the level of erosion experienced at each site prior to winter. Renourishment is generally undertaken at the following Quinns Beach sites each year which experience significant seasonal coastal erosion:

  • Quinns Beach, north of groyne 1;
  • Quinns Dog Beach, north of groyne 3; and
  • Quinns Dog Beach, north of groyne 4.

Renourishment locations are not limited to Quinns Beach however, with renourishment often undertaken at Yanchep Lagoon and other locations along the City’s coastline when necessary.

Major erosion events that are caused by winter storms can sometimes result in unsafe beach access and beach use. To improve beach usability and make the beach safe, the City will also undertake reactive beach renourishment when necessary.

May 2024 Planned Renourishment

In May 2024 planned beach renourishment was undertaken at three locations along Quinns Beach. 3,000 tonnes was placed at Quinns Beach, in front of the Frederick Stubbs Carpark, 2,000 tonnes was placed at Quinns Dog Beach, north of Groyne 3 and an additional 2,000 tonnes was placed north of Groyne 4. These works are supported and partly funded by the State Government under the Department of Transport’s Coastal Adaptation and Protection (CAP) Grant Program.
