Aquatic centre design strikes the right chord with community
Published Thursday, 17th March 2022
The concept design for the proposed Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) has received high praise from the local community via consultation recently undertaken by the City.
The AARC page on the City’s website received over 24,000 views during the consultation period, which ran from 6 December 2021 to 28 January 2022, with over 2,000 individuals taking the opportunity to give feedback.
The most popular elements featured in the design were the wide variety of amenities, the focus on accessibility, and the inclusion of an outdoor 50-metre pool.
Deputy Mayor Brett Treby said it was crucial that the community were involved at every stage of the project, to ensure the facility will suit the needs of the whole community.
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to provide their feedback on the design,” he said.
“It was fantastic to see that the vast majority of the comments received were positive and in support of the elements included in the concept design.
“Many members of the community also offered positive suggestions that will assist the City as we move on to the development of the final detailed design of the facility.
“It is now more important than ever for the community to rally together in support of this project, to ensure the City can secure the necessary funding to deliver a facility that suits the needs of our fast-growing community.”
Currently $40 million is allocated to the project, including initial funding commitments of $10 million from the State Government and $5 million from the Federal Government. An additional $30 million is required to ensure the City can deliver the full scope of the project.
Community members interested in supporting the project are encouraged to visit the City’s website to access the newly released advocacy toolkit, which includes letter templates, images, key contacts and other materials they can use to help secure additional funding.
