Talented skateboarders will show off their skills when they compete in the Australian Skateboarding League (ASL) State Qualifier in Wanneroo on 8 December.

Taking place at the Wanneroo Showgrounds Skate Park, successful qualifiers will be invited to compete at the Australian National Championships in Melbourne next year.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City of Wanneroo is proud to be supporting the Skate Australia and YMCA event through the City’s agreement with Sports Marketing Australia.

“The league provides a stepping stone for Australia’s next skateboarding champions and future Olympians,” Mayor Roberts said.

Mayor Roberts said the top five skaters from each state will be invited to the national final in Melbourne and with skateboarding becoming an Olympic sport from next year at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics the competition was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the local talent.

“The ASL State Qualifier is open to skateboarders from across the state and will attract competitors from metropolitan and regional areas,” she said.

“I encourage skaters and our community to support both the qualifier competition event on Sunday 8 December and a community skate day on Saturday 7 December, which will provide a weekend of spectacular skateboarding.”

Skate Australia President Karen Doyle said the ASL is a great opportunity for young skateboard enthusiasts to display their skills and progress through a structured national pathway.

“Skateboarding is finally getting the opportunity it deserves as a highly skilled and popular sport,” she said.

“The young people who come through are talented, motivated and going places, and the Wanneroo weekend will highlight the best in the state, with free entry to spectators,” she said.

Organisers are expecting more than 600 people at the Wanneroo Skate Park over the weekend of 7-8 December, with the chance to win over $2,000 in prizes.
